The latest Christie’s Fine and Rare Wines & Spirits Online: London Edition concluded last week, drawing fierce competition for some of the most sought-after Burgundy wines. Collectors and investors vied for top lots, particularly a selection from an esteemed Parisian cellar.
Exceptional Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Vintages
Among the standout offerings were three vintages from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, one of Burgundy’s most storied estates dating back to the 15th century. The lineup included Bonnes Mares 1962, Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 1966, and Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 1961—all of which exceeded expectations.
Record-Breaking Auction Results
The Bonnes Mares 1962 set a remarkable benchmark, hammering at £47,500, nearly eight times its lower estimate of £6,000-£9,000. Similarly, the Musigny 1966 achieved £35,000, significantly outperforming its £4,800-£6,000 valuation. Completing the trio, the Musigny 1961 nearly doubled its highest estimate, closing at £27,500 against projections of £9,500-£14,000.
Provenance and Market Strength
According to Christie’s, these results underscore the auction house’s expertise in presenting private collections with exceptional provenance, further reinforcing Burgundy’s stronghold in the fine wine market.
Other Notable Sales
Beyond these record-breaking bottles, two pristine 12-bottle cases of Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Clavoillon 1986 and 1991 saw spirited bidding, realising £8,750, well beyond their initial estimates.
The Dr Botenga Collection’s Continued Success
Additionally, Part 3 of the Dr Botenga Collection—following highly successful auctions in Hong Kong and London—added to the excitement, raising nearly £8 million across all parts. Top sales from this segment included a Jeroboam of Château Gruaud-Larose 1982, which achieved £3,000, nearly doubling its lower estimate, and two magnums of Pétrus 1975, which secured £9,375 against a £5,500-£6,500 projection.
A Strong Start to 2025 for Christie’s
In total, this first Christie’s auction of 2025 realised £1.214 million, with an impressive 89% sell-through rate, confirming continued strength in the fine wine investment sector. These results highlight the enduring appeal of rare, investment-grade wines, reinforcing Burgundy’s dominance in high-value auctions.
