Producer
Giacomo Conterno
SUMMARY
Giacomo Conterno is arguably the greatest producer in Barolo based just outside Monforte d’Alba in the south of the Barolo DOCG zone in Piedmont. It is best known for its Cascina Francia and the Monfortino Riserva Barolo labels, both of which are long-lived and earthy.
The latter is produced only in the very best of vintages and aged at least seven years in oak barrel.
This is regarded as one of the finest Barolos produced today and by many as the finest wine made from Nebbiolo in the world with only tiny quantities made when created.
In 1908, Giovanni Conterno opened a small tavern in the village of San Giuseppe, making Barolo to supply the business. The first Riserva was bottled around the time of World War I, and was one of the first examples of producer-bottled Barolo at a time when most were sold in bulk for early consumption. Roberto Conterno (Grandson of Giovanni) took full control over the running of this famous estate in 2003 where he continues to practice the traditional winemaking techniques of the area, producing long-lived, earthy wines.
