Harlan Estate
SUMMARY
A California wine estate that is known for its high-end wines, the Harlan Estate has a reputation as “the ultimate cult winery” because of its small production and high price point. Its flagship wine, Harlan Estate is widely recognized as one of the most sought-after Californian wines. The high elevation vineyards that it comes from allow the fruit to develop fully before harvest time in October. The 2016 Harlan Estate is an intense, richly textured wine with a medium-plus body and notes of cocoa powder, graphite & blackberry. Located in Oakville, California and built on a family homestead that dates back to the 1800s, Harlan Estate manages over 240 acres of vines under cultivation with no two blocks alike.
The winery uses over 240 acres of cultivated vines with each block being unique from one another. It’s most well known for producing highly sought after premium red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.
The wines produced by the Harlan Estate are deeply concentrated and feature a medium to full-bodied palate. They’re known for having notes of cocoa powder, graphite and blackberry that become more pronounced with age.
The history behind Harlan Estate runs deep and its reputation has only grown over the years as demand for their wines has continued to rise.
The Harlan Estate’s rich history and unique winemaking style have made the estate well-known in the wine industry as demand for their premium bottles continues to grow with each passing year.
The estate was initially purchased by H. William Harlan in 1984 and became a prominent name in the Californian wine industry.
The winery has garnered over 90 point ratings from Wine Spectator and was named “Winery of the Year” by Robert Parker’s Bordeaux book, which is an award that it holds to this day.
As of right now, the Harlan Estate is run by Bill Harlan’s son, Bryant. The winery has gone through many changes in recent years and focuses on producing wines that are more accessible to non-traditional wine drinkers.
The winery produces wines from all the different growing regions in California with its most notable being Napa Valley and San Francisco Bay Area, where it sources from about 50 vineyards.
It’s one of the few American wine estates that are able to produce a range of premium red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot due to their location in both areas which have warm climates perfect for producing high-quality grapes year-round.
