The challenges mounted with excessive rainfall, which increased humidity and brought with it the dreaded threat of mildew. Many vineyard owners reported a significant battle against mildew, a problem exacerbated by the moisture trapped in the vines.
Despite the hurdles, some producers are optimistic. They believe that careful vineyard management and selective harvesting may still yield wines of good quality. The region’s renowned terroir and the experience of its winemakers play a crucial role in navigating these unpredictable conditions. As if this wasn’t enough, early summer saw heat spikes that stressed the vines, particularly in soils with poor drainage. This combination of factors has left Burgundy producers on high alert as harvest approaches, hoping for a stretch of favourable weather to salvage the vintage.
Yet, even in the face of adversity, there is optimism. Burgundy’s winemakers are known for their expertise and resilience, and many believe that through careful vineyard management and selective harvesting, they can still produce exceptional wines. The Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne (BIVB) has stressed that precision in harvesting and careful grape selection will be vital to safeguarding the potential of this year’s vintage. Although the yields may be lower, several winemakers remain hopeful, pointing to the well-matured fruit and the balanced sugar and acidity levels in both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes as promising indicators.
