Sotheby’s, the esteemed auction house founded in 1744, made headlines last September by achieving the second-highest total price for a wine sale in the US. The sale, totalling US$9.3 million, featured a single-owner collection comprising 466 lots.
Renowned as the world’s premier destination for art and luxury, Sotheby’s facilitates access to exceptional art and luxury items through various channels, including auctions and buy-now platforms such as private sales, e-commerce, and retail.
The recent auction, titled ‘A Monumental Cellar,’ marked the commencement of Sotheby’s Wine autumn season in the US. Year to date, Sotheby’s Wine & Spirits has achieved $30 million in the US, marking a significant 25% increase compared to the previous year. The success of the latest sale has notably contributed to this upward trend.
Nick Pegna, appointed as Sotheby’s global head of Wine & Spirits in June, expressed satisfaction with the auction’s outcome, stating, “This exceptional result is a testament to the unrivalled quality of the wine and clarity of the collector’s vision, setting the foundation for a successful fall season at Sotheby’s.”
The single-owner sale amounted to $9.3 million, with an impressive 98% of lots sold. Among the top lots were five magnums of Romanée Conti 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which fetched $275,000, and twelve bottles of Petrus 1961, sold for $118,750.
The auction featured a diverse selection of wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, the Rhône, and included notable lots such as Le Pin, Château Lafite, Château Cheval Blanc, and Krug. Notably, the highest-grossing wine sale at Sotheby’s in the US remains the wines from the cellar of William I. Koch, which achieved $21.8 million in 2016.
‘A Monumental Cellar’ surpassed the previous record for the second-highest total for a wine sale at Sotheby’s in the US, previously held by The Don Stott Cellar, which achieved $8.4 million in 2015.
