Summary
The Giacosa family’s roots in Piedmont wine precede Bruno himself: his grandfather Carlo and father Mario ran a negociant business in Neive. Bruno officially launched wine under his own name in 1961, gradually shifting from buying grapes to owning top vineyard parcels.
Vineyard Holdings & Production
Bruno Giacosa’s total vineyard area is around 20 hectares, spread across Barbaresco and Barolo crus such as Falletto (Serralunga), Asili, and Rabajà. The estate’s annual output (across both “own vineyard” and purchased fruit lines) is in the ballpark of 400,000 bottles.
Classification & Status
Though Italy lacks a Bordeaux-style “First Growth” ranking, Giacosa’s holdings in elite crus (e.g. Falletto, Asili, Rabajà) place his wines among Piedmont’s very top tier. His strict quality standards—declassifying or withholding wines that don’t meet his threshold—have reinforced his status as one of the region’s preeminent traditionalists.
Generational Stewardship
Bruno Giacosa represented the third generation of his family in the wine trade. Before his passing in 2018, he gradually handed leadership to his daughters Bruna and Marina, who now oversee estate operations alongside trusted collaborators.
