Artistic Heritage

Founded in 1872, Domaine Ponsot is one of Burgundy’s great family estates, rooted in Morey-Saint-Denis. Across five generations, the Ponsot family has built a reputation defined by independence, integrity, and deep respect for tradition.

Terroir Excellence

The domaine’s vineyards lie in some of the Côte de Nuits’ most revered limestone soils, led by its historic holdings in Clos de la Roche. These sites deliver wines of precision, mineral depth, and remarkable ageing potential.

Summary

Domaine Ponsot was founded in 1872 by William Ponsot, marking its start in Morey-Saint-Denis. The estate passed to his nephew Hippolyte Ponsot in 1926, who planted uncommon varietals like Aligoté and began forging its distinct identity.

Bottling Innovation & Growth

Unlike many of its peers, Ponsot began estate bottling in 1934, at a time when most Burgundian domaines sold in bulk. Under Hippolyte, and later his son Jean-Marie, the domaine expanded through metayage agreements, leasing parcels in Chambertin, Griotte, and Clos St-Denis to broaden its holdings.

Vineyard Holdings & Production

Ponsot holds a commanding share in Clos de la Roche, being one of the largest proprietors in that Grand Cru (originally owning three of its four hectares). It also manages holdings in Clos St. Denis, Griotte Chambertin, Chapelle Chambertin, and Chambertin, among others. Production is relatively constrained: the Grand Vin sees about 1,000 cases per year.

Classification & Status

Burgundy does not implement a Bordeaux-style “First Growth” system. Nevertheless, Ponsot’s holdings in Grand Cru and elite climats place it in the top tier of Burgundy producers. Its commitment to integrity, minimal intervention, and expressive terroir secures respect among collectors and critics alike.

Generational Stewardship

The domaine has remained under the Ponsot family across multiple generations. Hippolyte passed leadership to Jean-Marie, and eventually Laurent Ponsot joined the estate in 1981 and now directs operations. Laurent has continued the family tradition while guiding Ponsot into organic and biodynamic practices.
